Gift #71: Yarn-winding party

Tonight my mother and I had a yarn winding party.  We both were ready to start new projects….but our yarn was not.  It was still wound as a skein.  In some brief moment of insanity, I left the knit shop without getting my yarn wound.  (My mom bought hers at a shop where they don’t wind the yarn for you, so she had a legitimate excuse)  Well, not having a mechanical ball winder at my disposal, we were reduced to arm power.  I had 365 yards of a silk, wool blend that loved snagging to untangle and rewind into a smooth, ready-to-use ball.   It was not a pretty process.  My mother’s yarn was 150 yards of a lovely, pure silk pink/grey yarn from Manos.  It was a bit thicker than mine and much easier to work with.  Here’s a picture of the two yarns all nicely wound up and ready to use.

Mom’s pink/grey silk is destined to become a ruffle scarf.  This is her second one – the first one she made was from a multi-colored pastel colorway and it was lovely.  My purple/brown yarn will hopefully become a shrug.  It’s the first time I’ve knit sleeves!  or any shaped garment, for that matter.  So here’s hoping that we both enjoy our new knitting journey, learn alot, and end with a beautiful piece of textile art.

Blessings to you,

I actually find the process of winding yarn into a ball relaxing.
