Gift #223: Icicles

The first fall of snow is not only an event, it is a magical event. You go to bed in one kind of a world and wake up in another quite different, and if this is not enchantment then where is it to be found? – JB Priestly

This quote isn’t exactly about icicles, but they are part of the magic of snow and I liked the quote. As part of our first big snow of winter, we have some impressive icicles hanging off the two-story high roof. When I took the picture, they seemed to be a couple of feet long. Icicles are fascinating to me – I love how their shape and how they drape everything with a layer of sparkle. They are amazing sculptures and each one is a miracle. They form when sun starts to thaw the ice and snow, but as the water dips off, the ambient temperatures cause it to refreeze, and they create wonderful stalagmite formations. They exist right on the edge of two planes, frozen and unfrozen. And they bring a sense of enchantment and magic to the landscape. They look like hundreds of frozen fairy wands.

Blessings to you,
Sarah
