Gift #305: Daffodils

I learned something very interesting about daffodils (Narcissus)  this week – they are early risers.  I was noticing this as I groggily made my way into work today and stopped by the crocuses and daffodils to wish them a good day.  The crocuses wake up later – their buds imagewere all closed up, wrapped up in their dreams.  They don’t open until mid-morning.  Daffodils also like to dance with the wind.  I was informed that this was referred to as “nodding their heads”.  They were nodding so vigorously that it was impossible to take decent pictures of them earlier in the week.  So on my walk today this evening, I spied a patch of them and they were much more photogenic.  They are such bright and happy flowers, full of sunshine. In western culture, narcissus plants are symbols of vanity, but in eastern traditions they are believed to bring good fortune and great wealth. And now it’s time for my favorite quote about narcissus, which I have been eagerly waiting to share with you…

“I didn’t know what narcissism was until I beheld my own narcissus”  Charles Kuralt

Makes me laugh every time I read it.
