Today is Johnny Appleseed’s birthday. He was born on Sept 26th, 1774. He is another one of my heros. I blogged about him last September too – if you’d like to read my previous post it is linked here. Just about every time I bite into an apple I think of Johny. Never doubt the ability of one man to change the world. When Johnny spent his life planting apples, I wonder if he ever imagined the impact that he would have. I wonder if he ever conceived of how many cultivars of apples would be available nearly 250 years later. Knowing his humility, I expect he didn’t have grand dreams of his legacy. He would have lived a happy and blessed life being grateful for every day that he had to make a difference by planting another apple tree. I love the song “The Lord is Good to Me” that Johnny Appleseed sings in the Disney short about his life. And so in tribute to him, here it is for you all.
The Lord is Good to Me
From “Melody Time”
The Lord is good to me
And so I thank the Lord
For giving me the things I need
The sun and rain and an appleseed
Yes, he’s been good to me
I owe the Lord so much
For everything I see
I’m certain if it weren’t for him
There’d be no apples on this limb
He’s been good to me
Oh, here am I ‘neath the blue, blue sky a-doin’ as I please
Singin’ with my feathered friends, hummin’ with the bees
I wake up every day as happy as can be
Because I know that with his care
My apple trees, they will still be there
Oh, the Lord is good to me
Yes Johnny, your apple trees are still here and the Lord is good. Happy Birthday Johnny and thank you!!
Blessings to you,
Sarah
