These few days after Thanksgiving are always a transition state. Our thoughts turn to Christmas and the coming months of winter. As part of my family traditions we would always start watching Christmas movies on Thanksgiving night and put up our tree on Friday. I look forward to those things, but I also want to hold on to fall and to let Thanksgiving linger in my heart and home a bit longer. So I thought I’d share one more prayer of thanks today. It’s actually a song, All Things Bright and Beautiful – my mom would sing it to me at night before bedtime. I thought about it today as I decorated the Christmas tree with birds, forest animals, nests, and mushrooms…lots of mushrooms. I love having a Christmas tree filled with ornaments of God’s beautiful creation.
All things bright and beautiful.
All creatures great and small.
All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all.
Each little flower that opens,
Each little bird that sings,
He made their glowing colors,
He made their tiny wings.
The purple-headed mountains,
The river running by,
The sunset, and the morning,
That brightens up the sky;
The cold wind in the winter,
The pleasant summer sun,
The ripe fruits in the garden,
He made them, every one.
He gave us eyes to see them,
And lips that we might tell,
How great is God Almighty,
Who has made all things well.
