Gift #933: Praises of Advent #5

You sit in the inky black darkness of night.  You feel as if you’ve sat there all your life and will probably do so for the rest of it.  In the quiet and dark you hear only the background noise at the periphery of your consciousness.  Perhaps it’s the bleat of a lamb, the rush of wind, a cough of a late traveller.  Maybe you lose yourself to your thoughts staring in the fire and wonder if there’s anything else to life as your eyes glaze into the dancing flames.  Can you even dare to hope that things might be different, that you would feel fulfilled and loved, that you wouldn’t feel so alone in a cold world?

Then a flash of light, an unearthly voice, a trembling of hand and foot.

And the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.  And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
And this shall be a sign unto you; You shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. Luke 2

You hear the message you never dared to dream of.  “Do not be afraid” you are told as blinding light pierces the darkness away.  Why? Because the messenger is bringing joyful news to you and to all people.  He announces a gift – a Savior has been born – to you.  For you there is a gift.  It is for you and for all people.  Don’t miss this – the Gift is all-inclusive, yet intensely personal.  You are told how to find your gift – it’s not a mystery, not a scavenger hunt – it’s a clear direction because the Savior is inviting you to come.  And then heaven rips open and the entire angelic host burst into praise for the Gift that is going to bring heaven and earth back together by reuniting God and man.
